Sometimes products just aren’t what you want them to be. Whether you had high expectations or knew nothing about the product, it’s always a shame when you’re excited for something new and it’s an absolute flop. Here are a few things that I’ve tried in the last month or two and been super disappointed by.
Babe No. 1 Green Tea Body Scrub
I got this scrub as a gift (thanks J+J), and I was super excited to try it, but as soon as I opened the packet I just got this horrendous waft of…smelly ocean. I have bad history with seaweed smells (awful sushi incident of years past) and didn’t realise that this scrub had seaweed as an ingredient. I tried to push through, I really did. I loaded up my shower with good smelling things and used the scrub, but all I could smell was seaweed, and it was just such a huge stinky let down. I’d still be keen to try some of Babe’s other products, I’ll just ensure I’m diligent with product-checking next time. Thankfully, my mum can handle the smell much more than I can, and thus it has now been relocated to her shower.
Australis Velourlips Liquid Lipsticks
Supposedly a dupe for LimeCrime’s famous Velvetines, Australis released their range of velourlips quite a long time ago. I purchased three (one is currently MIA) just to try them out after swatching them on my hand and being super impressed with their staying power. Unfortunately after getting home and wearing them one day, their staying power may be one of their only redeeming factors. These lipsticks are incredibly drying and difficult to wear (although to be fair, LC Velvetines tend to do this, too). Even with a lipbalm application beforehand, I’ve found them to ball up and feel absolutely horrid on the lips. Definitely not something I’ve been reaching for often, when I can get similar colours from my matte lipsticks and just deal with the re-application process.
Australis Fresh and Flawless Powder
I’ve never really gotten on with powder as a whole, but after hearing so many people raving about this powder and how wonderful it was, I thought I’d give it a try. I just find it makes me look so awfully cakey, no matter how light of a dust I’m putting on my face, and I find it doesn’t make my makeup last any longer or reduce shine whatsoever. Definitely a bit of a nothing product for me.
Maybelline SuperStay 24hr Makeup
Generally when I buy foundation I just guess my shade. It’s awful and it never works, but I continue to do it. When I bought this, however, I was actually quite impressed with how spot on I’d gotten in. The foundation applied well, blended in and matched my skin tone almost perfectly. I went about my day then returned to the mirror about 30 minutes later, where I was absolutely shocked by what I saw. The foundation had oxidised so awfully that I looked like a carrot. Definitely not one that I enjoy wearing, and definitely not one that I will be repurchasing.
Kora Organics Purifying Day and Night Cream
I received this in a Bellabox recently and was super excited that a) I’d finally gotten a good product and b) that I finally had the chance to try this brand. I love natural products so was really looking forward to trying to this moisturiser, but really wasn’t all that enamoured with it. It makes your face feel tight, almost as if you’ve got a very thin face mask on, doesn’t leave you incredibly hydrated and I’m really not a fan of the smell. I’m very glad I got to try this out before I bought it because I would have been super annoyed if I spent $60 on this product.
What have you tried recently that’s let you down?
